However, with the insane viability that Ghost has and the inability to defeat it with one half of my team, I had a tough time laddering and was finally forced to lay down the torch when Dynamax was banned.įire was given an interesting new tool with this gen, so I wanted to try them out! Heavy-duty boots means that Pokemon are no longer affected by entry hazards. Since Dynamax was still legal and Snorlax is, without a doubt, my favorite Pokemon, I picked up the reins and created a team around the Big Man. With Kommo-O as my only brick, I was forced to start again and I very quickly didn’t like what I found. However, I found that Dragon was not at all what I remembered with 5 of my 6 Pokemon on my original team having been removed in the Dex cuts. Given how much I played with it in Generation Seven, I wanted to drop back into Dragon immediately. I wanted to try my hand in several typings while Dynamax was still legal and some others when it was quickbanned. I was incredibly rusty and hadn’t played any Pokemon in Generation Eight prior to this, so I decided that I would pick up just a little bit before I dropped into a competitive tour where my friends were riding on me to pick up some wins. The old homies wanted to come together and do a final hoorah sort of thing, a final ride. A long time ago, this used to be done on an old side server called Azure, where there were actual monotype leagues. The groups with the best records would head into a playoff bracket where they would compete to be the best team. This tournament is called Ultimate League Tournament, consisting of usually 12 groups of 9-12 people who compete in a best of five Monotype series. With this foundation laid, one can imagine my surprise when my old friends contacted me about a Monotype team tournament we used to compete in when we all spent time together. Periodically, I would appear on this app for competitive posts and team breakdowns only for me to take a leave from this app as well. I had left the game, as had many of my friends, for different pastimes and grown rusty in my time away. However, when Generation Eight came with Sword and Shield, my enthusiasm in the game had fallen away. Throughout the entirety of Sun and Moon, I found myself forming teams, battling, and laughing with individuals across both my home country of the U.S. Truthfully, it is where I fell in love with competitive Pokemon and made some of the best friends I’ll ever know.
